Inondations dans l’Ouest : 112 communes, dont Rennes, reconnues en état de catastrophe naturelle
Rennes, along with 111 other municipalities in western France, has been declared in a state of natural disaster due to exceptional flooding that occurred in January, as announced in an official decree published on Sunday. This designation affects 70 municipalities in Ille-et-Vilaine, 24 in Morbihan, 12 in Loire-Atlantique, three in Mayenne, two in Maine-et-Loire, and one in Calvados. The declaration allows those affected to claim insurance for damages caused by natural disasters.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau reported that as of Sunday, 112 municipalities had been officially recognized for the disaster status, with evaluations still underway for the remaining 13. The flooding was unprecedented in the region, with statistical return periods for river flow rates exceeding 10 years. The Caisse centrale de réassurance (CCR) estimated the cost of damages between 130 and 160 million euros, affecting 6,000 to 8,000 insured properties. January was the wettest month recorded in Rennes since 1945, bringing about significant flooding in the Vilaine and Seiche rivers, but thankfully, there were no reported human casualties.
