« Des communes se meurent… » : en Charente-Maritime, une étude confirme la crise du logement
An investigation conducted by the Conseil d’architecture, d’urbanisme et de l’environnement (CAUE) of Charente-Maritime reveals pressing issues concerning housing in local policies. Partnering with LesCityZens, the CAUE surveyed local elected officials from November 7 to December 13, 2024. Key findings indicate that 91% of municipalities recognize housing as a significant concern, with 71% facing a housing crisis. While 26% of the 463 communes participated in the survey, they represent 46% of the département’s population, highlighting a critical issue for the region. Responses varied by commune size and geographic location, revealing challenges such as a high demand for rental housing (32%), a mismatch between supply and demand (21%), and limited land availability (13%), among others.
Experts, such as FNAIM President Alexandre Druet, suggest that local authorities collaborate with real estate professionals to create actionable strategies. Suggested measures include rehabilitating town centers to meet housing needs and revising rental agreements to facilitate co-living arrangements. The CAUE plans to hold a « Habiter demain en Charente-Maritime » seminar series from 2025 to 2026 to further assist local officials in addressing these housing challenges.
