Bybit, a cryptocurrency exchange, recently experienced a massive hacking incident resulting in the theft of over $1.4 billion, marking it as the largest heist in cryptocurrency history. The attack involved the compromise of an Ethereum (ETH) cold wallet, which is meant to securely store digital assets offline. Ben Zhou, the company’s CEO, stated that the hacker gained access to this wallet and transferred all its funds to an unidentified address. He reassured users that only the cold wallet was affected, and other wallets on the platform remain secure. As a precautionary measure, Bybit temporarily suspended ETH deposits, while withdrawals continued to operate. Zhou emphasized that Bybit is solvent and that customer assets are fully guaranteed on a one-to-one basis, even in light of this substantial theft. To manage increased platform activity, the exchange will implement additional security measures for large withdrawals. According to cryptocurrency alert specialist Zach XBT, the hacker may struggle to fully liquidate the stolen funds, which still amount to nearly $500 million. The company is actively investigating the breach to ensure better security moving forward.
